The BR 01 express steam locomotive is an icon of German railway history. Deutsche Reichsbahn introduced it for heavy express trains as one of its first standard steam locomotive classes. A total of 231 locomotives were built between 1926 and 1938. Later examples could reach 130 km/h, while their two-metre driving wheels reflected their express-train role. After the Second World War, the class served on both German railway networks; surviving examples now evoke the age of steam on heritage railways.
