The electric BR 103 became the emblem of fast TEE and InterCity services in West Germany. Following four prototypes, 145 production locomotives were built from 1970 to 1974. With six powered axles, a continuous output of 7,440 kW and a maximum speed of 200 km/h, it ranked among the most impressive locomotives of its era. For decades it hauled flagship long-distance trains for Deutsche Bundesbahn and later Deutsche Bahn.
