History and interesting facts: Szergej M62
The powerful six-axle M62 diesel-electric locomotive, nicknamed Szergej, was built in Soviet Voroshilovgrad (today Luhansk). Between 1965 and 1974, Hungarian State Railways MÁV acquired 288 machines in standard- and broad-gauge versions. Its 1,472 kW engine and 100 km/h top speed suited its main purpose: hauling heavy freight trains. The unmistakable sound of its two-stroke engine made it a railway legend in Hungary.
